SMS the Argus - February 21, 2006...

A little while ago a break in the power supply was attributed to a bolt in a turbine. I presume this time we can blame a nut - the one in charge of the power station.

Instead of increasing their tariffs, Eskom should compensate us for denigrating our quality of life.

Reopen Athlone power station - it would solve all the problems. The person responsible hasn't got a clue about how to plan.

We can save a lot of electricity if the government sends people out into the townships. I was shocked to see all the live wires running to and from electricity poles.

The City Police must start taking serious action against illegal use of electricity.

Why can Eskom not provide accurate information about when and how long we will experience cuts? I have had no power for five hours and no one can answer my questions.

I am 60 years old and we have always had veldfires and fog. I have never heard such rubbish as claimed by Eskom for the power failures. The truth is that someone did not notice that this country is growing, and is letting Trevor Manuel down.

First bird poo, now veld fires and mist. What's next? Too windy, hot or rainy? Use money to fix things and cut the high wages of people not doing their work.

Why can't they cut power to residential areas while we are asleep?

Traffic lights down and not one traffic officer in sight over a distance of 70km.

I heard on the radio that even New York has power cuts. There, they fire those responsible but here they punish the man in the street.

The power surges due to the failures have blown my CCTV and computer power packs. Who else has the same problem?

These power cuts are not a bad idea, given the fact that the consumer will have a much lower electricity bill.

Switch off the areas that don't pay and with the highest arrears.

Who is the ANC going to blame for all the power cuts? Twelve years ago everything was working and paid for. Such a shame that our present government does not realise the importance of continued maintenance.

During NP rule we had skilled people working for Eskom. We were notified before power cuts so we could be prepared. But these idiots just switch off.

Once again, we the public have been urged to save electricity, but what about the office blocks in the CBD? Their lights burn 24 hours a day.

The case of baby Jordan is important and sad, but I'm sick of seeing pictures of her family every night in the Argus. Is it necessary, even when they're in church? Stop fussing over that family, they're not the only ones who've lost loved ones.

To the Norton family, please dress respectfully when going to church, not half-naked.

Why give such a detailed description on fingerprint detection? Why don't you start a university degree for criminals? The newspaper is cheaper than university fees.

If Neil Wilson and Natasha Norton had practised safe sex there would not have been a murder trial.

Why give these taxis anything until they obey the rules like all other road users?

I will never fly SAA. Last month I went to book two tickets to Durban and was told the prices were too high for me. Immediately I walked over to the British Airways counter and gave them the business.

Thank you, Trevor Manuel, for the R40 increase. Now I can buy eight loaves of bread every month. Enjoy your three meals a day - the ANC has just lost my vote.

There is no substitute for sheer natural talent. I wonder how many South Africans watched those under-19 Pakistani and Indian cricketers. I hope they step up to the next level.
